Sunday Muse

"Yet one smile more, departing, distant sun!
One mellow smile through the soft vapory air,
Ere, o'er the frozen earth, the loud winds run,
Or snows are sifted o'er the meadows bare.
One smile on the brown hills and naked trees,
And the dark rocks whose summer wreaths are cast,
And the blue gentian-flower, that, in the breeze,
Nods lonely, of her beauteous race the last.
Yet a few sunny days, in which the bee
Shall murmur by the hedge that skirts the way,
The cricket chirp upon the russet lea,
And man delight to linger in thy ray.
Yet one rich smile, and we will try to bear
The piercing winter frost, and winds, and darkened air."

Weekly Top Shot

Most of the leaves have disappeared during this week of wind and rain, but last Sunday the hills were still filled with glorious color.  Here our old barn is peeking through the beautiful autumn hillside leaves.

Color has been fading fast, but a few trees are still clinging bravely to their leaves.

Just as you top the little rise in the cemetery, if you look back over your shoulder, you can see our old barn roof peeking out of the wooded hills

Solstice to Solstice :: Color

A woodland in full color is awesome as a forest fire, in magnitude at least, but a single tree is like a dancing tongue of flame to warm the heart.

Spectacular

We can't remember a spring where the trees have been so bright... so vivid... so spectacular.  Perhaps the mild winter and spring have combined to produce this abundance of bloom in the trees.  The path of sunlight during the day presents one breathtaking view after another.  It's as if our mountains are singing a song of spring!

A Little Spring Color

Color is returning to the mountains, and it is surely a welcome sight.  The pastures are beginning to green up a little, flowers and shrubs are beginning to bloom.  Even the trees are providing a beautiful showing as the mountains surrounding us change from grey and black and brown to palette of delicate yellows, reds and even a little green.  Oh my, how we love our mountains... but you already know that.
