Sunday Muse

Sunday Muse by Sheeps and Peeps Farm
Sunday Muse, a photo by Sheeps and Peeps Farm on Flickr.

One must have a mind of winter
To regard the frost and the boughs
Of the pine-trees crusted with snow;

And have been cold a long time
To behold the junipers shagged with ice,
The spruces rough in the distant glitter

Of the January sun; and not to think
Of any misery in the sound of the wind,
In the sound of a few leaves,

Which is the sound of the land
Full of the same wind
That is blowing in the same bare place

For the listener, who listens in the snow,
And, nothing himself, beholds
Nothing that is not there and the nothing that is.

~ The Snow Man by Wallace Stevens

  1. A mind of winter and to be cold a long time...
    I love this.

  2. just read "the longer the days, the stronger the cold" which is from one of the Little House books. we're having a warmish day and the sun just came out...hurrah! haven't seen the sun in a while.

    1. what a beautiful quote, thank you so much for sharing it!

  3. you got lots of snow there..our days are grey and full of rain

  4. So beautiful! We've had no 'real' snow here yet...I'm not sure if I'm happy or sad about that.

  5. Great poem and photo! I'd have to say I don't have much of a mind of winter. I don't care for the snow!
